A couple of metal bodied two AAA cells LEDs with short goose necks and lenses to focus the beam. They cost about £8 each and will be very handy in the field as well as in my lab.

Curses. They are about 1/4 the cost of my cold lights but mine are brighter 8-)

I've been looking for one and have just now ordered a small collapsible from 7dayshop. I also ordered 4 x 4 packs of Energizer Lithium AAAs and a couple of LED lights for microscopy. The lithiums are so cheap from this source that I don't think I'll bother much with NiMH now. But I have flashes and the LED lights to power so maybe I'll need them anyway.

What sort of LED lights? I've just built some "cold lights" on swan necks for about 1/10th of the cost of buying them.

Don,
I sometimes use a white/gold collapsible circular reflector to augment lighting. I have a 22" disc that folds down to 8" & gives me the ability to add a slightly warmer light than is possible with the pure white.

Previously for macros and close-ups outside I've used flash and a pair of reflectors, one curved, that attach to the top of the flash and the camera tripod socket. This is not going to be very convenient with the *istD so I've tried natural light on a very ordinary well known, probably one of the most photographed, subject:

The camera in the pictures was put there for illustration and is not even loaded (anyone need a mint MZ-50?) The reflector is an ordinary mirror that has been in the shed and gathered a thick coat of dust -- that I didn't wipe off for obvious reasons. If I do clean it I'll probably cover it with mosquito netting. I have the edge of the reflector in one of the pictures -- I apologize.
