I don't see having choices as an annoyance. I think it's great that
Windows can easily be customized to suit my needs.

Right. I just almost never like Windows' default settings, which are set
up for people who don't know which planet computers come from. So I have
to go through the nuisance of learning how to change those settings.
With the one you described, it took me a while.
Imagine paying our money for the latest and greatest DSLR, and when you
turn it on, it comes up in a mode to emulate a Kodak Instamatic. And
there are no instructions on how to turn off that mode. That is how I
feel about most of Windows' defaults.
My peeve today has been trying to banish something called "InstallShield
Update Manager" (or some such). Not Microsoft this time. It kept popping
up and telling me that it badly needed to check for updates for my
software. Corel did that to me. The software was installed 48 hours ago.
For now I think I have banished it, at least from operating. Until I
install some other software that reactivates it.
