When you dialed up, your PC was connected directly to the Internet.

With DSL, you're sitting behind a "modem" (DSL router) so your PC most likely does not have a publicly-reachable IP address. Thus, nothing can hit you directly unless you forward ports inbound through the router.

There are exceptions, of course, but that is the most likely scenario/ explanation.
