Correct me if I am wrong.
jpeg files are compressed 8-bit image files.
Tiff (from the camera) are 8-bit image files that have not been
compressed.
RAW contains 12-bit information from each sensor site that can be
converted to 16-bit TIFF in a raw converter (which still contains the full
12-bit data).
Personally, when shooting with my digital, I save everything as RAW
which allow me to edit the dynamic range of the original image. This
minimises black holes and blown highlights.
