You're still not using the correct procedure.  This is it:

1.    Cock shutter;
2.    Cock self timer;
3.    Nudge self timer back towards the lens;
4.    The shutter will fire when the timer runs down.

You're going wrong at step 3 by using the shutter release button.  The
self timer will trip the shutter but the shutter release will not trip
the self timer, although it does so on many other cameras and on later
Pentaxes with digital self timers.  What you did was to over-ride the
self timer when you tripped the shutter directly, and then when you did
operate the self timer the shutter wasn't cocked and was unable to fire.

Better luck this time.
