With a 600mm lens equating to a 900mm lens, assuming the nest is where he found it and he can get a good vantage point, he should be 15 - 20 feet away and still get an image where a grown hummingbird mostly fills the frame.
I'm not saying the nest should be moved or disturbed, and I didn't sense that was the case based on Joe's comment.
