I have SKYPE and GoogleTalk* connections and they're on all the time. While it may look like I'm off line -- this is because I stay invisible. Too many strangers were calling in from around the world. I had one call a day (at least) until I got tired of trying to talk to a Chinese lady from Shanghai, and a Polish man, who kept calling me at the most inconvenient times. They had to be blocked in the end. Its easier to be invisible -- then one doesn't have to appear rude.
* Why both? For some time I had trouble with SKYPE to certain destinations and GTalk solved this.
