An 'elderly G4 DP 800Mhz' is no slouch presuming you have an adequate
amount of RAM and a good, fast drive. I had Mac OS X v10.4.x running
on my year 2000 PowerBook G3 500Mhz with a 40G 5400rpm drive and 768M
RAM. Ran much better than 10.3.9 on the same machine in the same
hardware environment. I only replaced it because I need the RAW
processing capabilities and USB 2.0 in a portable now.

A PM G4 DP 800 tower would be considered a good step up from that
machine!
