This is called "ball creep" and its a common problem on ball heads. Only
a few expensive ones are without this (Arca Swiss?). Even the biggest
Manfrotto ball head display this phenomenon. The problem is biggest with
heavy lenses and lenses offering high magnification. With eg. a 600mm
its a royal pain in the ass - as soon as you frame your suject and
tightening the head down it creeps.
As you say, the main point with a ball head is to be able of framing
with one movement. However, I'm incapable of doing so anyway;
particularly when dealing with a heavy telephotos. Now how do you point
in a various direction, while hinged in a point below the lens, for
following the action and keeping the desired framing and keeping the
horizon level simultaneously? I simply can't do it. And when you figure
out that the horizon isn't level after all, how do you adjust just on
angle with a ball head. I found that I needed brain - hand coordination
I simply did not posses.
If you go for the 329 let us know. I'm considering that head. Have you
BTW tried or seen the 329? If so, how is it like? I've always had great
respect for Manfrotto products but that was until I bought the 460MG....
