I was a fine arts major in college. (Lest somebody point out that I said a while back that I was a zoology major, I had dual majors). I studied art history pretty intensively. Like you, I don't recall where I first saw a Turner original, but it had the same effect. I think big paintings were the style at that time, although he did so smaller ones.
