The A2X-S works well with every lens I've tried it on, although I've never 
attached it to a lens shorter than 135. It isn't limited to lenses under 300mm. 
It's just that the A2X-L is designed specifically for longer glass. Some long 
glass, such as all the 400/5.6 variants, can't be used with the L due to it's 
protruding rear optic. I use the A2X-S with my A400/5.6 quite frequently. It 
works well. Many of my bird and insect pics were shot with that combo. Here's
