The patents will have expired by now.

I was at SIGGraph when Michael Barnsley earned the emnity of
the computer graphics community by turning his technical
presentation into a content-free commercial pitch for his
new company.  Since then I have refused to have anything
to do with any software incorporating those algorithms,
lest any part of the price I paid should find it's way
back into Barnsley's pocket.
