Hate to rain on anyone's parade.... (or appear to be) But that "hand applied finish" can be duplicated with automation. It can also be duplicated in plastic as well as in a really GOOD coating that would NOT rub off (least not in the next 20yrs) from simply handling it or a soft neck strap rubing on it. (That shoots down all arguments coming about metal-to-metal abrasion). How about an electric blue camera with a Titanium nitride coating?? Or gold, yellow, red, black and even camo (shades of the Auto-110 Safari?). Want texture? Why not Powder Coat it? If it's good enough for the cover plates on your $25k Harley, why not yer $1,200 camera? Rub THAT off! Just like a hand applied finish can be applied that looks like it was done by automation, automation can do it to look hand-painted. Ever get yer car painted? Aren't you asking some kid to HAND PAINT your car just as good as the robot at the factory?? Better actually, since I haven't seen a car in 10yrs that wasn't orange peeled in the showroom. As far as roughness goes... the pool owners in the group know that the deck paint can have silica added to it so it becomes a non-skid surface.... textured. The Kennedy Tool company has been making a tool box for 50+ years that has a distinctive wrinkle finish.... and touch-up spray paint that duplicates/repairs that wrinkle finish. I don't know what PENTAX does.... maybe they DO hand paint it. (Doubtful). Maybe if they didn't hand paint it, they could afford to build a better camera for the same price.... now, THAT'S AN IDEA!
