If the base of the tree line were more horizontal, then the plane on which the horse is standing would be tilted. These's a nice, pretty much horizontal line of lighter, more yellow grass just at the level of the horses legs, and if that were tilted the entire photo would suffer.
Don, I like this one just about the way it is. Just one suggestion: when shooting a scene like this, take as many shots as you can afford. Sometimes very slight changes in the subjects's position can make a big difference in the results.
