If you want really small, I'd go for the Panasonic LX1. Superb lens,  
image stabilization, RAW format capture available. If you're willing  
to carry a little bit more, a Konica Minolta A200 is fantastic. About  
half the weight of a Pentax DS with 18-55 lens, about 30% smaller  
overall, and 28-200mm equivalent field of view choices with a superb  
lens. RAW, buffered writes, full manual control, etc.

Either is a bit more than $300 but well worth it.
