Without a specific camera schematic and specifications, it's guesswork.  What 
made me think of it as a possibility is the way the *ist series' firmware has 
been upgradeable to deal with such things as faster cards.  It strikes me that 
there has been a level of overengineering designed into the camera to allow 
this.  A _really_ fast writing card would take full advantage of it.
