Erwitt has published a book called "Handbook" which is about the expressiveness of hands. You can search the Magnum site to get a set of his pictures in which hands are an important element:

However, I wouldn't buy into that rule. Never trust a statement which includes 'never' or 'always'. I think the success of Erwitt's photo of Casal's cello is at least partly due to the fact the we know (at least from the context in which it was published) who Casals was. I don't think the technique is really very successful if you don't know who Linda is, or something about her, already, although I'm sure it works well for her friends etc. I think the way the photo is lit is rather bland and lifeless, to be honest. A still life, for me, needs something a bit special to make it stand out, and I think in this case the lighting could be improved and there could be more evidence of Linda as a living person. For example, she has a lot of travel books, but there is no evidence of her having travelled. Is she an armchair traveller, or has she been to these places? -- Cheers, Bob > -----Original Message----- > From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] On > Behalf Of gibikote > Sent: 05 July 2006 19:14 > To: Pentax-Discuss Mail List > Subject: Re: PESO - Portrait > > very interesting. > I hadnt heard of the portrait or the photographer (blissful > ignorance!) - > thanks for sharing that info. > went on google and found it.
