I'll offer up an opposing viewpoint: I really dislike galleries where clicking on a thumbnail replaces the thumbnail page with an enlarged view of a single image. I prefer to keep the thumb- nail images available - ideally in a separate window, but if that isn't possible then as a horizontal or vertical sidebar.
