Update. Here's one poster's views, fresh off the ether:

---------

Here's my personal experience.

I don't really see much difference between the PowerBooks and the new
MacBook Pros in terms of heat build-up or dissipation.

About two weeks ago I replaced my PowerBook 17" with a MacBook Pro 17".
I've noticed no significant difference in heat. The bottom of the new
MacBook Pro *might* be slightly warmer when I'm using it on my lap, but
it certainly isn't uncomfortable and the difference might just be my
imagination.

The fans on the MacBook Pro are either whisper quiet, or they come on a
lot less often than they did on my PowerBook. I only think I've noticed
them once in the past two weeks.

I live in the America Southwest, where the average temperature in the
shade is well over a 100F during the day. We never have the cooling set
to anything lower than 78F, so it isn't like I'm working in an ice box.

So the assertion that the MacBooks (I can only speak to the MacBook Pro
17") are fundamentally flawed in their heat dissipation by design
doesn't agree with my observations.
