The anchor isn't in Jack London Square.  It's at the entrance to the
square.  The entire area has a long history of ships and boats and
seafaring going back to the mid-1800's  The square is on an estuary, and
along the estuary you can sometimes find aircraft carriers and other naval
ships berthed, there is a ferry terminal, a few marinas, and Roosevelt's
yacht, the Potomac is berthed there as well (I've a pic of if you'd care to
see it).

While London may be most remembered for his wilderness tales, he spent many
years "before the mast," and sailed to many distant places.  Many of his
books were written during, and about, his years at sea.
