P mode does not make a lot of sense to me, but remember that lenses
without aperture rings (which I generally dislike, but read on) can be
utilised fully in Tv mode, too, on most or all of the above mentioned
cameras.

I've taught myself most of what little I (think I) know about macro
work, so I may be doing it all wrong, but I often use Tv mode for such
shots on my MZ-5n. I reckon I need all the DOF I can get, and there is
never so much light that the minimum aperture is reached (I'm not using
a flash), so I just set the time dial at the slowest speed I think I can
handle and leave the lens in auto, which in practice means the camera
will stop down as much as possible for the available light. So for a
macro lens, loosing the aperture ring may not be that bad.
