The golden hills we see here in California are actually the result of the out of control spread of certain type feed/hay that was used to feed cows that used to be all over these hills. People got used to it and now think it is normal. That goes back all the way to the influx of the Spaniards and haciendas. But actually the original California hills were probably a lot greener, covered with native grasses that were drought resistant. In some places those native grasses have planted as decoration now. So of return to nature sort of thing.
