As it happens, you are both right!

Most of the water you can see is seawater, draining down as the 
tide falls. (Our tides are up to 8 m, so it's a lot of water.)

On the left, in the middle to far distance, however, you can (if 
you know where it is) just make out the mouth of Sandy Creek; a 
small perennial stream. (For the geographically interested, there 
is a link to a google earth location file at the bottom of the 
page.) During the wet season, after rain, there is a considerable 
flow down there. In fact, occasionally enough to create 
quick-sand, which was a bit scary the first time I stepped in it.
