You're right, I didn't mention the freebie pile -- extra packaging, batteries 
if you buy enough cameras, and whatever else they put on the program.  
Generally it's something like "buy three body+lens and get this expensive flash 
for half price".  In the MZ days, the AA grip could be had for $10 if you were 
buying enough bodies+lenses.

There is nothing to stop a store from opening the outer box, selling you just 
the body at body-only price, re-ordering a body plus different lens and getting 
both that body and lens at a "kit" discount again.  That is my point.

Anyone who refuses to do that has no financial stake in the well-being of their 
business.

Yes, which is SOP for all manufacturers, but the kit is more than simply 
a discount the retailer gets for the camera + lens purchase. My D50 was 
actually broken out of a kit by a friendly salesman, but many won't do that.
