Exactly. I don't think Mauldin ever says exactly where Joe and Willy
are from, but they are definitely country boys rather than city boys.
I'm left with the impression that they came from _way_ out in the
country since they're even more countrified than the hillbillies in my
family. :-)
For anyone that's interested, Mauldin's book "Up Front" has recently
come back into print. It is a compilation of a couple of hundred of the
"Joe and Willy" cartoons, and some explanations and some of Mauldin's
background.
