It is from an interview with the Pentax boss at the end of last year or at
PMA (I don't remember). It has been posted on this very forum several
times.
Pentax have said that DSLR will be their main camera business at the expense
of P&S cameras. This is a complete change of policy. This means that
whetever they have been doing with the SLR line the last 20 years is not
indicative of the DSLR line-up of the future.
He also said that they will take it stepwise providing a natural upgrade
path for the customers to eventually end up with the DSLR equivalent of a
sports car (his words not mine). So far it seem to fit the bill pretty
well...

I will speculate that the naming policy reflect the strategy:
K [four digit]: Eg. the coming K1000D will be absolute entry level. Cheap,
not many features and likely plastic lens mount.
K [three digit]: Eg. K100D, K 110D. Entry level but also for those who want
a well speced camera. Typically for hobbyist or those who simply want a good
camera.
K [two digit]: Eg. K10D. Enthusiast camera suitable for the more demanding
user.
K [one digit]; Eg. the mythical K1D. Semi- or pro body.

This give rooms for cameras like K 200D, K20D, K10Ds, K3D while still making
sense. Of course this may all be bullshit....
