Whatever you do, *do not* put expensive items in the checked luggage, unless you want to part with it. I've lost a camera and a cellphone on two separate flights, once the entire bag vanished with my camera and a bunch of lenses and flashes in it, and another my sister put my brand new cellphone in her luggage, someone just took it out...
