Why not?   I've spent considerably more on CF cards (including
almost $400 on 2 1GB Microdrives when I first bought my *ist-D).

It's stupid to continue to value commodity memory at the price
you paid for it - it's worth, at most, the cost of a replacement.
Nowadays that seems to be somewhere around $20 per gigabyte.
