The other thing you should do after you get the spinning beach ball and an improper shutdown, or any system-wide glitch that is out of the ordinary is to repair disk permissions. Go into the Utilities folder (menubar>Go>Utilities) and find 'Disk Utility'. Double-click on it to run it. Once opened, select your iBook's boot partition from the list on the left - if only one partition it will just show one icon (underneath the hard drive icon), called something like 'Dave's iBook' or 'Horseshit' or whatever you named your computer ;-) Select it by clicking on it once, then click on 'Repair Disk Permissions'. Let it go through this procedure (shouldn't take long) and then quit the application when finished. It's a bit like mopping up the mess after a fine filly has just had a bloody good seeing to by Flicka.
