My original point, though, is that it sort of surprises me how everybody 
takes it for granted that the key element in this high(er) speed is the 
motor technology. This is far from obvious to me. Like I said, there is 
some data processing involved, too. Some of that seems does seem to be 
related to the type of motor, but not where you put it. The ring motor 
thingy can only be put in one place, obviously, but there are other 
setups using essentially the same technology...

Noise is a different matter, as there is bound to be *some* sound from 
the screws and gears. Still, I suspect that Pentax could make a much 
quieter system by just replacing the motor.

Is it true that the AF speed on the *ist Ds is slower than the one on 
the MZ-5n (which is fast enough for me), by the way?
