This is far from obvious to me. Like I said, there is some data processing involved, too. Some of that seems does seem to be related to the type of motor, but not where you put it. The ring motor thingy can only be put in one place, obviously, but there are other setups using essentially the same technology...
Noise is a different matter, as there is bound to be *some* sound from the screws and gears. Still, I suspect that Pentax could make a much quieter system by just replacing the motor.
