In the open dialog box in the bottom left corner there is a button
that says either "Use Adobe Dialog" or "Use OS Dialog".

Use the Adobe dialog (ie the button says "Use OS dialog"). I find that
it remembers my previous preference, where as the OS dialog never
does.
