Both my wife and son have Pentax P&S cameras. I can tell you that, for them at least, shutter lag is the single significant issue of why they tend not to use their cameras. My son has a 3MP and my wife the 750Z. The complaint is "What I saw in the viewfinder is not what the camera recorded".
I would guess that unless one is a patient photographer in mostly static situations, that I would factor in shutter lag as maybe one of the biggest factors in user dis/satisfaction.
