Thanks very much mate. I have a Sigma 50 mm f2.8 manual focus macro. It is a 1:1 magnification lens. I also have a set of extension tubes for the really close up shots, however with those I have lighting problems as the lens shades the flash (hotshoe mounted Sigma). I'd love to get an off camera flash or macro ring flash.
When shooting macros, particularly at the closest focussing point for the lens, I tend to shoot bursts of frames (I shoot RAW so that is only 3 frames on the DL before the buffer is full :( ) as you only have to move a tiny bit to lose critical focus. I tend to set the focus for the magnification I want and then move the camera to where it is in focus. As I said though, you only have to twitch a bit to have the shot out of focus, hence the burst of frames just in case. Your 105 macro should do the job for you (is it a 1:1 lens?). Also extension tubes are great tools to have and are not particularly expensive.
