The prism/mirror viewfinder assembly on a 16x24mm DSLR is not  
terribly large. The pop up flash unit is what makes the hump seem  
big. A CF card cage is probably bigger, an SD card cage might be  
bigger too.

A CF card cage is 30-40% larger in size than an SD card cage. Just go  
to an electronics component catalog and compare them. Now, that  
doesn't mean that a CF camera cannot be compact. But they're stuffing  
a huge amount of electronics into a pretty tiny space with these  
cameras, and trying to fit a pretty big battery too. Every mm of  
space counts.

There's not a lot of extra space in there...
