Shel, I have a feeling that a firmware upgrade may have helped, with the early versions of the D at least. Soon after getting the camera I took some shots in available dark at 3200 which turned out very noisy - not unusable but definitely not what I wanted! The next day, having forgotten that I'd left the ISO set to 3200, I shot some landscapes, which were Ok but definitely looked "grainy". However, more recently I deliberately shot at the top ISO and was very pleasantly surprised at the results- definitely useable. More technically-minded PDML-ers will no doubt tell me if that were possible!
