I also prefer to judge people as individuals ... but I find it very  
amusing that Tom continues to refer to this college senior as a "kid"  
while promoting that he judges him to be "more mature". Is he more  
mature because his point of view agrees with the senescent observer?

I have worked with many many college age people in the course of my  
career in high tech. I find many of them brilliant, intelligent,  
insightful and full of energy. Some are also quite mature. I would  
not demean such a person by referring to her/him as a 'kid', even if  
I were a crusty old curmudgeon.
