What you're suggesting here with the notion of "a P&S DSLR" is akin
to a K100D without a mode selector in modern terms. Everything run by
Auto-Picture.

I don't see AS and metering mode options as being a distraction to
the use of the K10D; I see them as providing more control. But if you
want simplicity for the photographer as being characterized by few
modes and simple controls, what you want is an inexpensive version of
the Leica M8 in an SLR. This is not "a camera anybody could use" ...
I know lots of people for whom the lack of Program mode cuts the
number of good exposures by a lot ... but it's a camera with a stark
appeal that leaves most of the decisions up to the photographer.

A "simple" DSLR for me would be:

- start with the K10D
- leave in the good electronics and antishake, weathersealing
- manual focus only
- Av + EV compensation, Manual "match needle" exposure modes only
- single or continuous exposure mode
- RAW, JPEG, RAW+JPEG only
- no alternative resolutions
- leave the DoF preview and mirror pre-fire, self timer
- leave out the popup flash
- dedicated P-TTL/ISO hotshoe and PC flash connections
- no need for battery grip
- wired remote release

In essence, a Nikon FE2 built around a DSLR chassis. I want high end
build quality, which you won't get for $300.

Different fantasy, I guess. ;-)
