Back in my married days (I call them "the dark ages"), I used the old
"loaner" thing more than once, and it worked quite well:

"What are those?"

"They're Klipsch kg2 speakers."

"What are you doing with them?"

"I'm bringing them in the house."

"I really don't think we can afford them."

"You're right, and thank you for being so prudent. However, someone
at the music store [that I used to work at] ordered them, and once we
got them, we realized they were no good for sound reinforcement.
Sadly, they got scratched in the warehouse [keeping in mind that I in
fact worked in said warehouse], so we can't return them to Klipsch.
So, Steve [the owner] said I could bring them home ~just to try them
out~. If we like them, we can keep them and Steve promised me he'd
charge me his cost, and we could maybe even do it over time. If we
don't want them, we bring them back, no problems, no charge."

"Hmmm... I don't know about this."

"Don't worry, honey!" <vbg>

Now, six months hence:

"Hey, those speakers have been here for a while now. Shouldn't you
bring them back soon? Hasn't Steve asked about them, or has he
forgotten?"

"Oh, yeah, well, I paid for them 3 months ago. He gave me a killer
deal, and I paid them over, three or four pays - it was so little per
pay that our meager household budget didn't suffer at all! Great, eh?
Sorry, it must have slipped my mind to tell you. My bad."

"Hmmmm... I'm not sure I like this, but I guess it's all done now."

cheers,
frank
