Yep, that's the basic way to go (and no, she can't damage anything
that way!)

A turntable hooked up to a stereo receiver or pre-amp -- the tape
outputs from the receiver/pre-amp to the sound card's line input. A
laptop computer is an especially easy way to go for this. You'd just
need to get a dual-RCA-to-stereo-mini-phone-plug cable/adapter from
Radio Shack for about $8.

For better quality A/D conversion, I use a device made by M-Audio
called the Transit USB, which goes between the receiver/pre-amp and
the computer but connects to the computer's USB port. It costs just
$79.00 and it's a really nifty gizmo!
