I always understood that Erie was more ship threatening, but Superior was more life threatening. That was because the short steep seas on Erie could break up a boat (great lakes freighter 660 feet long), but the the superstructure would probably still be out of the water. On superior if you floundered you sank in several hundred feet of water. Of course only 6 or 7 of my relatives earned their living on those freighters in positions from cook to skipper. A couple are still Great Lakes Pilots.
