I've always understood that it's best to take 'em down to empty and in that way they can become fully charged. Recharging them before they are depleted doesn't allow for a full charge. Anyway, that's what I remember hearing. I seem to recall Sony or Canon suggesting that you fully deplete the bats before recharging.
