You could try using a gel diffuser over the front of
the flash (or a rubberized unit from StoFen). You can
buy sheets (or rolls) of diffusion in different kinds
from Mole-Richardson's online store:

It's almost impossible to tear and if it crumples,
just cut yourself another piece. You attach it to the
flash with paper tape.
