Depends on the picture, for me. And I know my monitor is not as good as some, 
although I try to calibrate it about every 6 months or sooner. Probably need 
to calibrate it again. I do have a Spyder, but truthfully I have to dull the 
monitor down after doing it, it leaves it too bright for my eyes. I don't like 
the whites to bang out at me since most Windows writing is now black on white. 
If it is left on too strong I find it hard to read and write.

OTOH, color is important to me so I like it to be fairly accurate. Accurate 
as to the way the scene looked to the eye at the time. And my taste has changed 
over time, because once I liked Velvia and now it often looks too saturated 
to me. But I guess I could generalize that the simpler the scene then the 
stronger the color can be and I will like it. The more "messy" or complex the 
scene, then I seem to like the color more subtle.

But, yes, a lot is personal preference.
