Once again, YOU don't get it. The consumer buys the camera and then has to get accessories and lenses that fit it - just like razors and razor blades. Once a consumer has bought into a system, s/he's required to buy accessories, including lenses, that fit the camera.
BTW, when was the last time you had a camera that actually wore out? Sure, they sometimes need repair, or break beyond repair as a result of a fall or accident, but actually wearing out? Maybe for a pro who shoots many hundreds of frames per day, but for the average bloke, it ain't gonna happen. I've had more problems with lenses than with camera bodies, although none of the lenses actually wore out, but they needed repair or adjustments more than the camera bodies to which they attached. IIRC, you often talk about the great longevity of the various Pentax bodies. Others here, and elsewhere, have done likewise. Now, I'm just guessing, but I'll bet the larger profit - dollars or percentage-wise - for Pentax and the other camera manufacturers comes, not from the entry level or one step up cameras, but from the kit lens and accessories that are sold along with it. Sell the camera inexpensively, make the money on lenses and accessories. It's a variation on razors and razor blades. Shel > [Original Message] > From: J. C.
