I use a dial-up connection at work for troubleshooting purposes and
occasionally just to bypass the company's filters.  Gmail actually
responds very nicely over dial-up.  If you don't have javascript
enabled, the interface is even simpler and loads quicker.  You can
also specify the number of threads to display per page.  However, POP
download is available.  You can use any mail reader you want.  It
wouldn't hurt to just try it out and see if it's to your liking.
Pretty much anyone with a gmail account should be able to send you an
invite.  Lemme know if Frank flakes out.  <g>
