How about this:

Rember the Contax AX, which would autofocus with manual focus lenses 
(by moving the film plane)?

That kind of autofocus system should be much easier to implement with a 
digital sensor than with film (given the pressure plate, film supply 
from the cartridge, film feed to the take-up spool, etc.).

Then we could have *total* backwards compatibility with older Pentax 
lenses! K and M lenses would even autofocus (without having to stack on 
the 1.7x AF converter)!

....yes, I'm being facetious.
