My experience is exactly the opposite. I generally get much better results with manual focus when shooting with very long lenses, even shooting dynamic subjects. About the best work I've done with autofocus and a long lens was shooting motorcycle roadracing using a Canon 10D and 300/4L IS lens, using the 10D's predictive continuous focus and the IS for hand held work. Most of the time, a much better result has been had by using a tripod, careful setup, and patience.
