Paul, Did you turn it on? The Nikon's use an LED/LCD overlay that's quite dark when turned off, but is much brighter when turned on (Because the LCD goes transparent). The D200/D80 viewfinders are unimpressive when turned off, but quite decent when turned on. The 18-55 is crap however, and the 18-135 isn't much better.
