To my eyes they look almost similar in quality. Contrast looks a tad better on 77, but I wonder if that's mainly caused be bokeh differences.
If you see at picture #3 in lower right corner you will get an idea about why I think this. The same spot (at the twig) indicates that the 70 has CA problems. If I buy one of them, I think I'll go for the compact 70mm, mainly because I already have the fast and furious (read heavy) FA* 85.
