Which has better optical performance despite the aperture number. Your
thoughts, own experience with the lenses, perhaps is appreciated.

Roman, I once compared the DA 40 to the FA 50 F1.7. This was a 
systematic test, on a tripod, at a range of apertures up to F11 (if I 
recall correctly). The subject was a mud-brick wall, at a distance of 
about 40x the focal length of each lens.

The result is that they are very close in sharpness. At Actual Pixels I 
found the FA 50 F1.7 to be just a bit sharper, but you have to go to a 
high level of enlargement to see that. For practical purposes, they 
offer comparable image quality. I think you would find a comparison to 
the FA 50 F1.4 to be about the same.

So whichever you decide, you will get good image quality. There are 
other factors that distinguish these lenses, especially speed vs. 
compactness. Those are what you should evaluate in regard to your 
shooting needs.
